Tom Krause, a Silicon Valley executive known for aggressive cost-cutting, has been appointed to a pivotal role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), overseeing federal spending reforms, reported Daily Mail.

Krause is a shrewd businessman, he is the CEO of Cloud Software Group, a holding company following the merger between software firms Citrix and TIBCO.

The Trump administration said it hired Krause as a consultant for DOGE to work as a special employee of the Treasury department, as per the report.

He is an ally of Elon Musk and has been tasked with managing the nation's payment system. He will be working closely with the six baby-faced men handpicked by Musk to help trim the fat on public spending, reported Daily Mail.

Formerly the head of Citrix, Krause made a bad name for himself in the office due to unpopular decisions. For example, there were thousands of layoffs during his tenure at Citrix to curb its $15 billion debt burden. Krause trimmed overhead by doing away with bonuses and telling people to report back to their offices, for a company which enabled remote working.

It is not just the layoffs that attracted attention. Krause is being sued for attempting to freeze Congress-authorized payment instructions, a move that would have had great implications for the country's financial system. It has raised concerns among lawmakers as Senator Ron Wyden asked to clarify Krause's intentions.

His strategy has earned him the moniker "hatchet man" in the business world, a reputation signified by his track record of laying off large numbers of staff.

The Daily Mail quoted an anonymous user, who posted at the online forum TheLayoff, "The criteria for DOGE is how many you have fired, how much you enjoy firing people, and how little you care about the impact on people's well-being."
