Why is Maduro Guerra known as ‘The Prince’?
Maduro Guerra’s political rise has long been tied to his father’s presidency. Shortly after Nicolás Maduro came to power in 2013, he appointed his son as “Head of the Corps of Special Inspectors of the Presidency.” The role cemented Maduro Guerra’s status within the government and earned him the nickname “The Prince.”
In 2020, Maduro Guerra was indicted by US authorities alongside both of his parents. According to court documents unsealed Saturday, he faces charges including conspiracy to import cocaine and conspiracy to possess machine guns.
The Department of Justice alleges that he worked with narcotics traffickers and narco-terrorist groups to move cocaine into the United States. President Trump previously claimed such drug flows were responsible for the deaths of 300,000 people each year, as per a report by The New York Post.
In 2017 alone, Maduro Guerra is accused of shipping hundreds of pounds of cocaine from Venezuela to Miami using shipping containers, as quoted in a report.
During his father's presidency, he advanced into a number of positions connected to the government, which some have long described as political grooming. Among these were serving in Venezuela's political organizations affiliated with the ruling party and leading a specially established position as Head of the Corps of Special Inspectors of the Presidency.
He was a member of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and was serving in the National Assembly by 2021.
Additionally, his rhetoric has made headlines. He gained notoriety during Venezuela's 2017 constituent assembly period for making a threat against Washington, which was extensively covered at the time, as per a report.
Maduro Guerra is not alone. Several senior officials who remain in Venezuela also face US indictments related to alleged drug trafficking and corruption.
