UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacks Home Secretary Suella Braverman
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has sacked Home Secretary Suella Braverman after she came under attack for writing an article in the 'Times'. In the article, the Indian-origin MP criticized what she called "pro-Palestinian mobs" and wrote that protest scenes were "disturbingly reminiscent" of those seen in Northern Ireland. Braverman also criticized the Met Police for a "double standard" over their handling of protests. Quitting her office, the Tory MP said it was "the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary". James Cleverly has replaced her.

Ambitious Tory MP

If media reports are to be believed, Braverman is known to have ambitions to be the next Tory leader. Though she was voted out of the 2022 contest to replace Boris Johnson, she still enjoys support on the right of the party. Earlier this year, she hit the headlines with provocative comments such as saying Britain faces an "invasion" of migrants.

Suella Braverman was appointed Home Secretary, responsible for overseeing UK borders and policing, when Liz Truss became prime minister in September 2022. She stirred controversy after sending an official document from her personal email, which was against the rules. She also criticised the government saying it had "broken key pledges that were promised to voters". She was asked to resign. Rishi Sunak reappointed him only six days later.

Roots in India

The Tory MP married Rael Braverman at the House of Commons in 2018 and their children George and Gabriella were born in 2019 and 2021. Her parents came from Kenya and Mauritius. Her mother was an NHS nurse and Tory councilor, she also ran to become an MP. Suella was born in Harrow, north-west London, and grew up near Wembley.
