Since last year, Bankman-Fried has been detained in the same prison. Sentencing him to 25 years in prison for fraud, he stole $8 billion from users of his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX. He invested in startup capital, political donations, and his cryptocurrency trading firm, Alameda Research.

According to the source, the room is designated for high-profile offenders or those needing extra protection, and the two are just two of the about 20 prisoners imprisoned there. Previous inmates of the institution included prominent figures, including the disgraced pop singer R. Kelly and the criminal Ghislaine Maxwell, who has close ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

The prison is known for its harsh surroundings and can accommodate roughly 1,200 inmates. Combs' attorneys described it as too horrific for a pretrial defendant last week, and the attorney for an inmate who passed away there during a fight this summer described it as hell on earth because of overcrowding and understaffing. Combs' lawyer Marc Agnifilo has since changed course, saying he can't say enough good things about the M.D.C., which has been responsive to our and his needs.
