The "Pakistan Democracy Act" was introduced by Republican representative from South Carolina Joe Wilson and Democratic representative from California Jimmy Panetta on Monday, The Hill reported.
Who is Asim Munir?
General Syed Asim Munir is Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS). Munir did his graduation from Officer's Training School (OTS).
Munir reportedly had the backing of Nawaz Sharif when the former was appointed as the Pakistan's Army Chief, as per a Times of India report.
Munir visited China, the UK, the UAE, Saudi Arabia.
Munir is only the third Shia in Pakistan to head the country's army dominated by Sunni, TOI reported.
What are accusations against Pakistan Army Chief?
The bipartisan bill accuses Gen Munir of "knowingly engaging in the wrongful persecution and imprisonment of political opponents", and would place sanctions on the military chief within 180 days under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. According to the news portal, violators can be subjected to denial of entry to the US and ineligibility for US visas.
The bill must be passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate and then signed by President Donald Trump to become law.
