Taking to Twitter on February 14, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley announced that she will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, being the first challenge to her one-time boss Donald Trump, the former US President. Eying for the White House, Haley said, “I’m Nikki Haley and I’m running for president”.

Nikki Haley was appointed by former President Donald Trump as the 29th US ambassador to United Nations. She will be laying out her plans for the presidential bid in a speech in Charleston, South Carolina on February 15. She is now the first direct opposition to Trump in the Republican party.

Who is Nikki Haley?

Nikki Haley became the first female and Asian governor of South Carolina in 2010 and won reelection in 2014. Prior to becoming South Carolina governor, she spent six years in the South Carolina legislature. In one of the most notable moves as the governor, Haley signed a bill in 2015 ordering the removal of the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds in the aftermath of nine Black worshipers being killed at a church by a white supremacist.




Haley even gave a Republican response to former US President Barack Obama in 2016 and discussed immigration. That same year, she was named among the 100 most influential people by Time. In 2017, she became the US ambassador to the UN but abruptly stepped down the next year. In her brief tenure, Haley announced sanctions against Russia. She even announced the US stepping away from UN Human Rights Council.

With regard to her ideologies, Nikki Haley is a pro-life Republican and supports tackling immigration. Though Haley has worked in the Trump administration, she has criticised her former boss after the January 6 Capitol attack in 2021.
