Who is Mariah Medina? Texas lawyer’s attire sparks controversy after judge’s remarks in front of packed courtroom

In an unusual incident, Texas defense attorney Mariah Medina has found herself at the center of an unexpected courtroom controversy after saying a judge called out her attire as 'inappropriate' in front of defendants and fellow lawyers. Medina, a former San Antonio journalist, shared her ordeal stating she was wearing a sleeveless gray J.Crew shift dress during a brief appearance in Bexar County court on September 21. According to Medina's social media post, the judge asked her to approach the bench, questioned whether she believed the outfit was appropriate for a jury trial and asked if she had a blazer in her car. Medina later shared a photo of the dress on social media, explaining that she had worn the same outfit during television appearances and in other courtrooms without encountering any problems. Medina's background as a television reporter also became relevant to the controversy because she posted an older video showing herself wearing the same dress while working on air.

"This is what I was wearing today when a judge said that I was inappropriately dressed for court," Medina wrote on X, sharing a photo of herself outside the Bexar County Government building.




"It’s a dress I’ve worn on air countless times and a dress that I have worn to other courts without issue. I was confused, so I explained that it’s a shift dress...," added Medina.

"She had me come around the bench so she could see my outfit... in front of defendants and other lawyers," Medina further wrote on X. "She laughed and asked if I really believed that my dress was appropriate for a jury trial.. then asked me if I had a blazer in my car."

Medina said she was surprised by the judge’s reaction because she believed her dress complied with the court’s stated requirements. According to the New York Post, Bexar County Criminal Court rules require attorneys and court officials to wear business attire, while business-casual clothing may be permitted at an individual judge’s discretion.

According to Medina, her case was not going to trial on that particular day, but there were criticisms concerning how the matter had been publicized. In spite of having different views regarding the manner in which the whole issue had been addressed, Medina stated that she would wear a coat in future before appearing in front of the judge.

"Apart from her having her dress code on the doors outside her court (that my dress didn’t violate), it was completely mean spirited and unprofessional to address it in the manner that she did. My case wasn’t even going to trial today, and she, as the judge, knew that," Medina said as quoted by the outlet.
