Who is Marcus Byrd? Here’s all about 25-year-old mini-tour pro selected into 2023 Genesis Invitational

Marcus Byrd is set to play at the 2023 Genesis Invitational which starts on Thursday, February 16 at Riveria Gold Club. The PGA tour event’s host Tiger Woods made the announcement regarding Byrd, who is the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption, which was awarded every year since 2009 to honour Charlie Sifford and reflect the progress made toward promoting diversity in golf.

Who is Marcus Byrd?

The Washington native, Marcus Byrd started playing gold at the age of three and was supervised by his father Larry Byrd. Marcus attended Middle Tennessee State University and played a crucial role institution’s conference championship wins in 2018 and 2019. He suffered a rocky period after facing injuries following a car accident which made him miss the remaining 2018 season.




In 2019, upon returning to the sport, Marcus went on to win Puerto Rico Classic and the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. He played an important role in the team securing wins and multiple championships including conference championships and the NCAA Regionals.

Byrd’s father passed away in 2020 due to Covid-19-linked complications. He mainly played on the Advocates Pro Golf Association (APGA) Tour. Notably, he does not lead an easy life. It is known that he does not own a car or a home and spends most of his time on tours. Marcus Byrd has two victories and five runner-up positions in his last eight years on the APGA Tour. Just two weeks ago, Marcus scored a 3-over 75 in the final round of APGA’s farmers Insurance Invitational to win the tournament which also led him to earn $30,000, the biggest amount of his career.
