According to an NBC News report, the opening statements reprised the theories that were put forth during the first trial. The case garnered significant public attention due to its complex circumstances and allegations of a police cover-up.Background of the Karen Read case
Back in January 2022, John O’Keefe was found unconscious in the snow outside a house in Canton, Massachusetts. He was declared dead. According to the prosecutors’ claim, Read allegedly hit her boyfriend with her SUV. However, she has pleaded not guilty to the accusations.
Prosecution alleges Read killed her boyfriend, presents new evidence
As per NBC report, special prosecutor Hank Brennan in his opening remarks told the new jury that a firefighter heard Read say she hit him (John) repeatedly at the scene. It added that the prosecution is relying on the new mobile and car data. This data, the prosecutors argued, will establish the timeline. The reports added that Brennan said that the data from the dash cam of Read’s SUV showed that she reversed and accelerated to 75 per cent power. This, the attorneys said, suggested that she struck O’Keefe. He further referenced voicemails left by her post midnight and claimed that the defendant knew O’Keefe was injured but did nothing.
Additionally, the jury was shown clips of Read’s media interviews including one from where she was wondering aloud if she ‘clipped’ him but did not believe he looked fatally hurt.
Defence claims it was not a car accident
Defence attorney Alan Jackson argued that the evidence will show that O’Keefe was not hit by a vehicle at all. The defence claimed that the probe was flawed; they accused lead detective Michael Proctor of lying, fabricating evidence, and tampering with Read’s vehicle.Witness testimonies
Timothy Nuttall, a firefighter and paramedic, was the first person to testify. He said that he found O’Keefe in the snow during a near-blizzard with no pulse and deep scratches on his arm. Identifying Read in court, he recalled her saying she hit O’Keefe. However, during cross examination, the defence highlighted the discrepancy in his statement. Also Read : JoJo Siwa is not a lesbian?
