As the World Cup quarterfinals match between Argentina and the Netherlands entered extra time on Friday, American journalist Grant Wahl, aged 48, collapsed.
Last month, Grant Wahl was detained from entering the Qatar stadium wearing a rainbow t-shirt supporting the LGBT community.


In a statement, the US Soccer Federation said it was "Heartbroken by the news. Fans of soccer and journalism of the highest quality knew we could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists."



Grant Wahl's wife, Céline Gounder, expressed her shock in a tweet and showed her gratitude towards friends, she wrote that she was extremely overwhelmed.

A day before he passed away, Grant Wahl had a party in Qatar on Thursday to commemorate his 48th birthday.



Grant Wahl was reportedly unwell for ten days, he wrote, "My body finally broke down on me. What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort."

"I didn't have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic and the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis."

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, praised Grant Wahl's immense love for the game and stated that his reporting would be missed by everyone who follows the global competition.

Numerous UK journalists have paid tribute to him as well.

Grant was in Qatar to cover his seventh FIFA World Cup and was well known for his fervent passion for the sport.
