Apalachee High School shooting.
Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, is being held for his part in a fatal shooting. Nine people were injured in the Wednesday morning event, which resulted in the deaths of four people—two teachers and two students. As per the reports of Yahoo news, Gray was recognized by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) as the gunman. Gray, according to the authorities, turned himself in not long after the school resource officer approached him. How he was able to carry a gun inside the school is still a mystery to investigators.

Details of the shooting

The shooting occurred on campus during class time. Students described chaotic scenes as Gray, a fellow student, left his classroom during an algebra lesson and returned with a firearm. Another student refused to let him re-enter the classroom, after seeing him carrying a gun. Gray then went to a neighboring classroom, where he began shooting, as described by eyewitnesses. He fired at least ten rounds. Gray was apprehended by law enforcement within minutes and taken into custody. No specific motive has been discovered so far, and police haven’t identified any targets of the attack.

The investigation and Gray’s history

Law enforcement revealed that Gray had been previously questioned in May 2023 regarding anonymous online threats about a school shooting. The FBI had investigated these threats, traced them back to Georgia, and conducted interviews with Gray and his father. At the time, Gray denied involvement, and no further action was taken as there was no probable cause for an arrest. Authorities had been notified of hunting guns in Gray's home, but he reportedly didn’t have unsupervised access to them. The investigation now focuses on how Gray acquired the firearm used in the shooting.

The victims have been identified as teachers Christina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall, and two students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Among the injured was David Phenix, a school staff member, who was shot in the foot and hip. Following the tragic event, a vigil was held for the victims in the community of 18,000 residents. The attack marks the 23rd school shooting of 2024, contributing to a grim total of 11 fatalities and 38 injuries in such incidents this year.
