Bryan Frederick Jennings, who was convicted in the 1979 abduction and killing of a 6-year-old girl, was executed Thursday evening, marking Florida’s record 16th execution of the year. Jennings, 66, had been sentenced to death for the rape and drowning of Rebecca Kunash, who was taken from her bedroom more than four decades ago.

Jennings was pronounced dead at 6:20 PM after receiving a three-drug lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Starke. Asked whether he wished to give a final statement, Jennings responded firmly, 'No', reported AP.

Department of Corrections spokesperson Jordan Kirkland said the procedure happened without issue. "The execution took place without incident," Kirkland said as quoted by AP. "There were no complications."

WHO IS BRYAN FREDERICK JENNINGS?

According to court records, as reported by AP, Jennings was a 20-year-old Marine on leave on May 11, 1979, when he removed the screen from a 6-year-old girl’s bedroom window while her parents were elsewhere in the home.

He abducted her, drove to a canal, raped her, and then, according to testimony, struck her with such force that her skull was fractured before drowning her. Arrested hours later on a traffic warrant, Jennings matched a witness description, and evidence.

Jennings was twice convicted and sentenced to death for the 1979 murder in Brevard County, but both verdicts were overturned. A third trial in 1986 reinstated the death sentence. His final appeal was rejected by the US Supreme Court Wednesday. He also drew life sentences for kidnapping, sexual assault and burglary convictions.

The execution of the ex-Marine was one of three scheduled this week in the US, though Oklahoma’s governor spared the life of a man just before a planned lethal injection Thursday. On Friday, Stephen Bryant is set to be executed by firing squad in South Carolina for a spate of killings more than two decades ago.

RECORD 16TH EXECUTION IN FLORIDA IN 2025

According to AP, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed Jennings’ death warrant, has overseen more executions this year than any state governor since the US reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

The prior Florida record was eight executions in 2014; this year’s tally has already surpassed that, with additional executions scheduled for Richard Barry Randolph on Nov. 20 and Mark Allen Geralds on Dec. 9. If carried out, Florida’s total would reach 18.

All executions in the state are performed by lethal injection, using a combination of a sedative, a paralytic, and a heart-stopping drug, according to the Department of Corrections.

Jennings' execution brings the nationwide total to 42 this year, with at least 16 more executions planned for later in 2025 and into 2026, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
