Kenyan distance runner Benson Kipruto triumphed in a thrilling photo finish to win the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, edging out compatriot Alexander Mutiso by just three-hundredths of a second. Both runners clocked 2:08:09 in one of the closest finishes in the event’s history. In the women’s race, Hellen Obiri reclaimed her title in stunning fashion, shattering the course record with a time of 2:19:51 at the World Athletics Platinum Label road race.

With his New York victory, Kipruto cemented his place among marathon greats, becoming the first man to win four different World Marathon Majors, following his triumphs at the 2021 Boston Marathon, 2022 Chicago Marathon, and 2024 Tokyo Marathon.

Who is Benson Kipruto?

Benson Kipruto (born 17 March 1991) is a Kenyan long-distance runner and Olympic bronze medalist in the marathon. A four-time World Marathon Majors champion, he has won the Boston Marathon (2021), Chicago Marathon (2022), Tokyo Marathon (2024, where he set a course record and personal best of 2:02:16), and New York City Marathon (2025).


Kipruto has also placed on the podium multiple times, including second at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, where Kelvin Kiptum broke the world record, and third at the Boston Marathon in both 2022 and 2023. He is the younger brother of marathoner Dickson Chumba. Benson Kipruto's height is 5'7" (170 cm), and his weight is around 125 pounds (56.7 kg).

According to World Athletics, he was born in the village of Tolilet. He recently purchased some land in Kapsabet, 40 kilometers away, and relocated his wife and their 1-year-old daughter, Princess Camille Chemutai.

The runners start their morning runs before the sun rises and reside in a simple dorm. In addition to the dust that is kicked up on the dirt roads around Kapsabet, this is done to avoid traffic, which can be dangerous.
