Born in 1932, Asma Hamza was one of the earliest women music composers in Sudan and the Arab world. This field was dominated by male singers and music composers. She wanted to be a singer, but her voice was not found suitable for singing.

Asma decided to be an oud player and her father gave her an instrument. Oud is a flute-like instrument, but it has no fret and its neck is narrow. Besides, playing oud and improving her skills, she also began composing music for songs. It was not allowed in conservative Arab society in those days to sing a song or play music for women. So, Asma Hamza began to sing songs and compose music in secret. But slowly and gradually, she broke the taboo and in 1946 she became the first women music composer.
