Who is Alex Jones, whose bid to overturn the Supreme Court’s $1.4 billion judgment was rejected
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the petition from Alex Jones, dismissing the right-wing conspiracy theorist’s effort to reverse a $1.4 billion libel ruling issued by a lower court for his false claims in regard to the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Jones has experienced heightened legal scrutiny following the juries in Connecticut and Texas discovering him responsible in 2022 for defamation and resulting in emotional tensions through his repeated lies in regard to the massacre, which stated that the lives of 20 first graders and six teachers. He has made several attempts to obstruct the sale of his far-right media outlet, Infowars, to cover the destruction.

Jones’ Supreme Court Statement

In his September petition, Jones mentioned, “The result is a financial death penalty by fiat imposed on a media defendant whose broadcasts reach millions.” The families impacted waived their right to react, and the Court did not mandate them to make a remark.

In a separate emergency petition that was filed last week, Jones highlighted that Infowars averages 30 million daily followers. His lawyers cautioned, “these viewers/listeners will not have just been deprived of a valued source of information, the risk is they will have been greatly deceived and damaged by operation of media source InfoWars by their ideological opposites.”

Court-Ordered Asset Sale

Earlier this year, a federal judge ordered that Infowars’ parent organization, Free Speech Systems, be provided to a court-appointed receiver, responsible for selling its holdings. This directive reopened the possibility for satirical platform The Onion to bid for the outlet.

As it's common in many cases, the Supreme Court provided no explanation for rejecting the petition. Jones, discovered liable in 2022 for repeatedly stating the Sandy Hook massacre was a “hoax,” has yet to deliver any section of the over $1 billion provided to the families.
