Ales Bialiatski, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court in Belarus.

Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Belarusian court on Friday. A court in Belarus capital Minsk convicted Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski in charges of smuggling and ordered the maximum-security penal colony, according to reports.

The sentencing of Ales Bialiatski and other activists was criticised by exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana. Taking to the the twitter, Sviatlana wrote "We must do everything to fight against this shameful injustice & free them."

Bialiatski is known for his pro-democracy activism. Bialiatski documented human rights abuses in Belarus since the 1980s.


He is also the founder of organization Viasna or or Spring. It was established in 1996 following a referendum that helped President Alexander Lukashenko who is considered as a close Russian ally.

Bialiatski was arrested in 2020 during nation-wide protest against Lukashenko. Bialiatski was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for 2022. Human rights groups from Russia and Ukraine also received the prestigious award in 2022.
