The White House has announced that President Donald Trump will sign an executive order today, formally declaring Antifa a domestic terror organization, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed. The declaration marks a major shift in the federal government’s approach to political violence and extremist movements.

Leavitt said in a press briefing: “Antifa is going to be designated a domestic terrorist organization … as soon as today, later this afternoon.” The order is expected to provide a legal framework for investigating the funders of Antifa, along with enhanced coordination among federal law enforcement agencies.

The decision follows the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which intensified calls from the Trump administration to label Antifa and similar groups as domestic terror entities.

Trump has made prior statements about designating Antifa a terror group during his presidency, notably during protests in 2020.

Legal and constitutional questions

Experts note that US law currently does not clearly allow for designating domestic groups as “terrorist organizations” in the same way as foreign groups.

There are concerns about First Amendment protections, due process, and how “Antifa” will be defined, since Antifa is generally viewed as a decentralized ideology or movement rather than a structured organization.

Once signed, the Executive Order could enable federal authorities to pursue legal actions against individuals who provide financial or organizational support to Antifa.

Enforcement will likely involve multiple agencies, including the Department of Justice and Homeland Security. There may also be judicial challenges, particularly over constitutional issues.
