Russians are increasingly supporting their President who has threatened to launch a nuclear attack on Ukraine. This support is only moving up and is being seen as greater support for President Vladimir Putin. The war that began in 2022 is escalating day by day and Russia has suffered many reverses in recent times. Russia is shoring up its support among its allies including China and North Korea who have extended both military and diplomatic support to it. In May, the Russian forces held nuclear drills in a sign of escalating conflict. Putin has said that Russia need not use its nuclear arsenal to win the war in Ukraine but shall not hesitate in doing so.

Increasing support in Russia:

A little over one-third of Russians said that they supported the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine. About 34% of the Russians supported Putin’s idea of using these weapons to maintain the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2024. This is a 5% increase as compared to the year 2023 when only 29% supported Putin’s dangerous idea. This has been the highest since Russian launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Russians have termed it as a special military invasion and not an invasion.

Reasons behind this threat of a nuclear offensive:

In recent times, especially in the eastern and northern territories of Ukraine, the Russians have suffered a setback. Armed with modern weaponry and support of the western nations and its other allies, Ukraine has targeted Russian troops in its own territory and other targets in Russia. Most recently, the Russian navy’s Black Sea fleet sustained heavy damages. This is as per various media reports in Ukraine. This has been disputed by the Russians.
