Where’s ChatGPT-5?? The anticipation for ChatGPT-5 is building, but OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has just hinted that it may not arrive as soon as hoped. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted that ChatGPT-5 may not be available immediately, despite previous speculation that it would be released in early August.

The ChatGPT-maker has already revealed its open-weights models, gpt-oss, this week after months of teasers. In contrast to the GPT models and other well-known LLMs, such as Google's Gemini, these models provide insight into their processes and thought processes.

The hints intensified Wednesday evening. "LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10AM PT." was the post that OpenAI made on X. The "S" is a five, indeed. According to Altman's post, the livestream will be "longer than usual."

Usually, OpenAI's livestreams of new product announcements appear on its website just before the event, and it will undoubtedly post the link on X beforehand.

A recent post on X hinted at product launches "over the next couple of months," but also warned users about "capacity crunches" and a rough ride in the near future. The delay has left users eager, but braced for a potentially choppy experience.

What did Sam Altman actually say about new releases?

The much anticipated ChatGPT-5 has not yet been revealed, despite OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's statement on X that "we have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months – new models, products, features, and more."

It was widely believed that ChatGPT-5 would be released on August 1st, as many news sources had predicted. But when the calendar turned to August, all we saw was the OpenAI CEO's tweet, as per a report by TechRadar.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">we have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months--new models, products, features, and more.<br/><br/>please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. although it may be slightly choppy, we think you&#39;ll really love what we&#39;ve created for you!</p>&mdash; Sam Altman (@sama) <a href="https://twitter.com/sama/status/1951695003157426645?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 2, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Why hasn’t ChatGPT-5 launched yet?

Launching ChatGPT-5 at the beginning of the month would have been ideal, and Altman's reference to the "next couple of months" suggests that we may still have to wait a little while for the release of OpenAI's most impressive model, as per a report by TechRadar.

“Please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. Although it may be slightly choppy, we think you'll really love what we've created for you," Altman said, warning ChatGPT users that they may experience some disruptions over the coming months.

Are users already feeling the strain?

According to a ChatGPT user, the service has begun to randomly cap the daily number of image uploads at 30, which is disrupting serious users' workflow. The majority of Reddit users think this is a short-term glitch rather than an actual OpenAI policy change. Users of ChatGPT may experience some "hiccups" during the upcoming months, Altman cautioned.

Instead of requiring users to choose between several confusingly named model versions, ChatGPT 5 is anticipated to be the first OpenAI model to automatically route requests to the most appropriate model version or research method.

It is said to have significant gains in speed, accuracy, and resource efficiency.

There is still time in the month for an August release, even though it is annoying that OpenAI missed the beginning of the month for the release of ChatGPT 5. It will be interesting to see if the new model will be available to free ChatGPT users as well or if it will only be available to Plus users.
Demand for ChatGPT 5 is expected to reach an all-time high upon its release, particularly if the image generator is enhanced.
