Former National Security Advisor John Bolton’s house in Bethesda, Maryland was raided by the FBI at 7 am on Friday, as reported by The New York Post. Footage showed agents in FBI jackets with bright orange lettering walking up to his Maryland home.

Bolton, 76 years old, served in Donald Trump’s administration between 2018–2019 but has been a sharp critic of Trump since leaving the White House. Kash Patel, FBI director, said after the raid: “No one is above the law. FBI agents on a mission.” The Mail reported that Bolton was at home during the raid, but he was not arrested or taken into custody, as reported by The Sun.

FBI raid linked to classified documents

The investigation is believed to be connected to classified documents, according to The Post. About 30 minutes after the raid, a post appeared on Bolton’s X account, warning about Russia’s imperialistic goals in Ukraine.

He said Moscow still wants Ukraine as part of a “new Russian Empire.” He added that Russia demanded more territory in Donetsk, which President Zelensky would never accept. Bolton claimed Trump is pushing peace talks only because he wants a Nobel Peace Prize, but he doubted any progress, as per The Sun report.

Bolton has faced classified documents issues before — in 2020, he was accused of including classified information in his book “The Room Where It Happened.” Trump even tried to sue Bolton before the book’s release, saying he broke a non-disclosure agreement.

Bolton’s long history with US presidents

Bolton has a long political career under four Republican presidents. Ronald Reagan, assistant Administrator of USAID, Office for Legislative Affairs. George H.W. Bush made Bolton Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs between 1989 to 1993. Under George W. Bush, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006. Later, Donald Trump chose him as National Security Advisor and he served from 2018–2019.

Bolton and Trump had many policy clashes — especially on Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea. Before he left the White House, they fought over Trump’s idea to host Taliban leaders at Camp David, a presidential retreat in Maryland. Trump later announced on X that he had asked Bolton to leave, but Bolton said he had already resigned in writing, as per reports.

After returning to the presidency in January, Trump canceled Bolton’s security details, just like he did with 40+ ex-intelligence officials. Trump mocked Bolton while explaining this move, calling him “a very dumb person” but admitted he used him for his tough image, saying people thought Bolton might attack because he was a “warmonger.” Bolton told The Hill he was disappointed but not surprised by Trump’s decision, as stated by The Sun.
