Jones stated, “She wound up going up and feeding in an area on the hillside and the rocky ledges that none of the other giraffes had ever gone on before,” and later mentioned, “And when she came down off of there, she came down on the wrong side of the gate.”

After that point, she is believed to have left the monitored region and moved into the surrounding wild land.

Search operation across rugged terrain

Efforts to find Gracie have included helicopter sweeps, aerial observation, and ground-level searches across thousands of acres. The ranch is surrounded by highly uneven land, making visibility and tracking really challenging.

Initial helicopter scans spanned around 7,500 acres (almost 3,000 hectares), but no trace of the giraffe was discovered. Later, potential sightings were reported, but by the time search teams responded, she had already moved away.

A $5,000 reward has been announced for confirmed information that could assist in her recovery.

Why a large animal can still go missing

Even though giraffes are among the tallest animals on Earth, wildlife experts and local authorities cite that size alone does not guarantee easy detection in remote areas. The Texas Hill Country is packed with thick vegetation, rocky slopes, and wide undeveloped areas that can conceal movement.

Jones highlighted the isolation of the area, mentioning, “People are not in danger of her because she's not around people,” and citing, “She's out in very, very rough, heavily wooded lands.”

Real County Sheriff Nathan Johnson cited that animal escapes are not unheard of in the area. He mentioned, “I've had wildebeests, I've had water buffalo, I've had monkeys, I've had zebras, all go missing,” while adding that recovery outcomes vary widely depending on circumstances.

Survival and movement in the wild

Even though giraffes are not native to Texas, they can survive for a period due to available vegetation and limited predator presence in some regions. However, the primary difficulty lies not in survival but in locating them. The combination of vast open land, uneven topography, and low human density makes tracking a large animal unexpectedly complex once it leaves controlled property.

Gracie’s disappearance has evolved into a rare and puzzling case of wildlife escape in Texas.
