Where can you see the Northern Lights tonight? Everything you may like to know

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis is a natural light display in Earth's sky. These are seen when the highly charged particles carried by solar storms are reflected to the poles by the Earth's magnetic field.

If you have missed the Northern Lights, don't worry. Nature has given you one more opportunity to watch this astronomical event. The Space Weather Prediction Center has said that coronal mass ejection erupted from the sun on June 25 and may clip the Earth on June 29. It also issued a watch alert for a minor geomagnetic storm, level 1 out of 5. It has also said that a minor geomagnetic storm generally makes the aurora visible at high latitudes, like northern Michigan and Maine.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has made a tool called the Aurora Dashboard, that offers a visual, animated prediction of where the aurora might be seen in the next few minutes or the following day.

Where to watch?

According to 'Forbes', it can be seen in states like New York, Wisconsin and Washington. The NOAA has said it will have a Kp index of six, so, the lights will move further from the poles and appear “quite bright and active” to observers under the correct viewing conditions. However, Canada and Alaska have a higher chance of seeing the lights.

What are the Northern Lights?

An aurora, commonly known as the Northern Lights, aurora borealis, or Southern Lights, Aurora australis is a natural light display in Earth's sky. It is particularly seen in high-latitude regions around the Arctic and Antarctic. It displays dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky.

How do the Northern Lights appear?

Magnetic storms, triggered by solar activity, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections, create solar winds. These solar winds carry energetic charged particles that hit the earth's atmosphere. They are redirected to the poles by the Earth's magnetic field. They appear in the shape of the Northern Lights or the Southern Lights.
