Donald Trump continues to enact sweeping changes during his second term, but pressure is mounting for the ex-presidents to take a stand. However, it remains unclear whether any of the ex-presidents will ever break their silence.

Democrats are frustrated by the glaring silence of former Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and George W. Bush. Many expected these former leaders to speak out in opposition, but their silence has left critics wondering why they remain on the sidelines.

What is Democratic strategists' perspective on ex-presidents' silence?

Democratic strategist Joel Payne stated, "No one knows more about the importance of our presidents respecting separation of powers and showing restraint than former presidents." "Those voices and perspectives of our former presidents would be crucial to the public discourse at this moment, given Trump's ongoing power grab," as quoted in a report by The Hill.

"I'm not sure what they're waiting for," remarked a former Obama senior aide.

According to another Democratic strategist Lynda Tran, it is more crucial than ever to honor and uphold long-standing customs that prohibit debating the nation's current leader in the Trump era.

Why are ex-presidents staying silent?

The former presidents' attempts to criticize Donald Trump would not lead to positive results, according to Susan Del Percio, a seasoned Republican strategist who opposes him.

She claimed that since Donald Trump is not at all affected by what people think, no one can influence him at this time. "There's no influencing," she stated. These presidents are aware of this; in fact, they are the ones who know the power of the presidency the best.

What actions has Donald Trump taken so far?

During his hectic first month in office, the US President has attempted to drastically cut the federal workforce while granting sensitive government payment systems to Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He has attempted to drastically reduce federal spending and alter birthright citizenship.

Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Bill Clinton's repeated warnings

Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Clinton all made repeated warnings about the dangers a Donald Trump reelection would pose to the country.

Days before he left office, Joe Biden issued a warning about the dangers of a second Trump administration, pointing out that America was becoming an oligarchy of extreme wealth, power, and influence that threatened democracy, fundamental liberties, and rights.

Barack Obama has also made frequent statements about democracy since he left office in 2017, advocating for pluralism and urging Congress to oppose it.

But the former presidents have largely remained silent since January 20. Obama linked to an opinion piece in The New York Times on social media platform X to voice his concerns when Trump announced earlier this month that he was closing the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

In the post, he urged Congress to oppose the agency's dissolution, stating that it would be a grave foreign policy error.

George W. Bush has made it a point over the years to never "step on" the current president, despite some people believing that he would have the most influence as a Republican. At least outside of election season, former presidents are generally reluctant to publicly criticize the actions of their successors, as per a report by The Hill.
