When Will John Furner Assume the Walmart CEO Role?

Taking over the position is John Furner, the current president and chief executive of Walmart U.S. He will formally assume his fresh duties on February 1, 2026, just one day following McMillon’s retirement. Furner’s long tenure at Walmart starting in 1993 and covering over 30 years, has leadership positions in all three of the organization’s operating segments. He has served for six years as the head of Walmart’s U.S. arm, one of the company’s most important business areas.

Doug McMillon’s Legacy

McMillon, now 59, will have a significant legacy. Under his leadership, Walmart increased employee wages, extended family leave advantages, and introduced education programs that provided certifications and degrees to associates. He also supported Walmart’s aim on affordability and guided significant enhancements in technology, that includes early adoption of artificial intelligence to advance both consumer service and employee effectiveness.
