Researchers made a surprising discovery while exploring the depths of a flooded cave close to San Antonio. The exploration of Bender’s Cave’s waterways led the team to come across some rather odd fossils. There were bones of the giant ground sloth, as well as teeth of mammoths, camels, and an odd-sized armadillo-like animal called Holmesina septentrionalis. What made these fossils particularly interesting was not only their number, but their condition as well. Fossils found in caves, particularly flooded caves, usually remain relatively untouched and protected from all kinds of outside elements. This means that what the researchers found is a relatively clear picture of how things looked back then. These findings are around 100,000 years old.

What can these fossils tell us about the past environment?

The presence of so many different animals in one place raises doubts about the old perceptions of how central Texas appeared during the Ice Age era. The cave has changed the way these discoveries are made

One of the least expected facts about the discovery is the way it occurred. As opposed to the conventional method of excavations, the researchers used diving and navigating through underwater passages to uncover fossil deposits. The fact that this discovery was obtained in such a manner proves that there can still be fossil sites that could be missed due to inaccessibility. Moreover, dating such fossils could present problems, as the presence of mineral deposits in caves interferes with common methods. However, the scientists managed to obtain approximate minimum ages by studying calcite deposits surrounding the bones. What this discovery implies is the existence of similar ecological communities that could be found in other underground structures. Therefore, Bender's Cave ceases to be a unique discovery and turns out to be an indicator of the concealed parts of prehistoric history.
