Millennials are used to using ASL, LOL, IMAO, and other such terms in text messages, chats, and social media. But that generation of adults already feels old with the new lingo of the Gen-Zers and younger kids.

The newest term (at least we think it is new) being used these days is 'No cap'. While some people think it may mean ‘no upper limit’ or ‘no fuss’, that’s actually the older generation’s version. What ‘no cap’ means is something else. Read on to know.

What does a person mean when they say ‘No cap’? Here's the definition of the slang and how to use it.

Gen-Z people use the word ‘Cap’ a lot. And ‘Cap’ in slang means a ‘Lie’ or something ‘False’.

So, it means that when you say ‘No cap’, it implies you're saying that you are ‘not lying’ or that you are simply ‘speaking the truth’. The term is used to convince someone you are chatting with or the people in the chat group, or your social media followers that what you are saying is absolutely true.

According to USA Today, the phrase ‘No Cap’ has its origins in African-American Vernacular English (AAVE), the English language as the Blacks speak. According to Dictionary.com, in the 1900s, the term ‘To cap’ meant ‘to brag’, ‘exaggerate’ or ‘lie about something.

Like we have explained above, ‘No cap’ can also mean something that has no upper limit, like in financial terms. In the Green’s Dictionary of Slang, in the 1940s, ‘To cap’ also meant ‘To surpass’. So, ‘No cap’ can be used for no upper limit.

But for Gen-Z and generations after it, right now, ‘No cap’ means ‘No lie’. So use it accordingly in a sentence or text.
