"It's like an AI helper that always has your back, inspired by the cool versions of what we all watched in movies growing up," Altman said during his keynote at DevDay.

"You can delegate ambitious pieces of work the way you would to a high agency engineer or a chief of staff that you work with," he added.

OpenAI describes Dots as "always-on agents built to handle everything." The company also says the assistants are "an extension of you."

Dots are available through OpenAI's ChatGPT platform. The company said future versions will allow people to communicate with the agents through phone and text.

How is OpenAI Dots different from other AI agents?

The launch puts OpenAI into an increasingly crowded AI assistant market.

Meta recently released Muse, an AI agent aimed at tasks such as booking travel, managing email and handling other everyday jobs. The app quickly reached the top of Apple's App Store download charts, according to the information provided.

Each Dot is powered by GPT-6 Astra and has its own cloud computer. It can work across connected apps, Codex and ChatGPT Work to research information, analyze data, prepare documents and build software.

OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, which the company says delivers near-Astra performance at one-fifth the cost.

The move comes as concerns about AI agents continue to grow. OpenAI has faced questions over agents behaving unexpectedly and operating beyond intended boundaries.
