The initiative, which involved soliciting images of the 30 most prolific unidentified offenders from the city's leading retailers, has yielded significant results. Within days, 149 suspects were identified, some with connections to serious criminal activities, all having previous arrests related to drug dealing, sexual offenses, burglary, violence, and possession of firearms.
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley described the outcomes as ‘game-changing.’
Retailers have urged the government to take action against retail crime, which has led to an estimated loss of £1.9 billion in revenue annually in the UK.
Policing minister Chris Philp has even suggested the integration of passport photos into the police database to facilitate CCTV matching. The Met's facial recognition technology is capable of matching features against police mugshots in about a minute, allowing officers to collaborate with stores in building cases against identified suspects from 302 CCTV stills.
Sir Mark emphasized that the majority of identified suspects through this technology are career criminals involved in serious offenses. He stated, "Through this tactic, we're not only improving how we protect shops and support the business community, we're stepping further forward in identifying and tracking down serious criminals and protecting all of London's communities."
While the Met sees this as a promising advancement in precision policing, concerns have been raised about the implications for privacy. Emmanuelle Andrews from human rights charity Liberty voiced opposition to the technology's widespread use, cautioning that it encroaches on privacy rights and may inhibit free speech.
Approximately 50,000 shoplifting incidents were reported last year.
