What is ‘Kessler Syndrome’ — and why do some scientists think the space disaster scenario has already started?

Recent reports are claiming that a pretty significant term is gaining prominence in the field of space science with every passing day which is known as the ‘Kessler Syndrome’. Eminent space scientists all over the world forecast that a space disas...

Space debris is something which poses an escalating threat to satellites, spacecraft and space exploration with numerous eminent experts warning about the potential for a catastrophic ‘Kessler Syndrome’ which is a scenario where orbital collisions create an exponential cascade of space junk, reported CNN Science.

According to CNN Science, the International Space Station (ISS) has already performed 39 debris avoidance maneuvers since its inception while highlighting the growing risks in the orbit of the Earth.

During current days, over 47,000 objects are being tracked in space while compared to 23,000 just over a decade ago. These objects range from defunct satellites to tiny fragments that can eventually cause significant damage due to extremely high orbital velocities, asserted CNN Science.

Collisions, weapons tests and accidental explosions are the things which have contributed to the proliferation of space debris with incidents like the satellite collision of the year 2009 creating thousands of new fragments.

Several experts actually disagree on the exact timeline of potential orbital congestion, but at the same time, there is consensus that the situation is eminently critical. CNN Science noted that the proposed solutions include developing cleanup technologies like deorbiting sails and implementing international regulations.

In such times, the United Nations has also taken initial steps with the Pact for the Future which eventually aims to discuss frameworks for space traffic and debris management.
