Macrohard: Elon Musk's new AI project
AI software company Elon Musk: The name 'Macrohard' may sound like a joke, and even tech billionaire Elon Musk admits the name is tongue-in-cheek, but the project behind it is serious.

Elon Musk's Macrohard Explained: A “Purely AI” Software Company Inside xAI

Musk wrote on social media platform X last year, "Join @xAI and help build a purely AI software company called Macrohard," adding, "It's a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!" as quoted by TCD.

Macrohard is an ambitious initiative inside Musk’s AI startup, xAI, aimed at creating a software company run entirely by artificial intelligence.

Why Musk Believes AI Can Simulate Companies Like Microsoft

Musk has argued that software giants such as Microsoft, which do not manufacture physical hardware, could theoretically be simulated entirely by AI.

He explained, "In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI," as quoted by TCD.

The concept is simple but bold, to build a company where AI systems handle the work typically done by human employees.

Trademark Filing Signals Macrohard Is More Than a Joke

The US Patent and Trademark Office shows that xAI filed a trademark application for “Macrohard” on August 1, 2025, covering downloadable computer programs and software, signaling the project goes beyond an online quip.

The ‘Human Emulator’: Macrohard's AI Employees at Work

Macrohard is reportedly a “human emulator”, an AI system designed to simulate human workers on a computer.

How Macrohard’s AI Interacts With Screens, Keyboards, and Mice

These systems interact with keyboards and mice, read screens, and complete digital tasks without modifying the software they use, as per a Coincodex report. Within xAI, AI-powered “employees” are already operating in real workflows. In some cases, colleagues have searched for human teammates at empty desks, unaware the tasks were being handled by AI, as per the Coincodex report.

Faster Than Humans? Macrohard Performance Explained

According to details shared publicly, these emulators can take on tasks they were not specifically trained for and perform between 1.5 and 8 times faster than humans. The models are updated multiple times a day using AI agents based on Grok and are optimized for programming, content creation, and product testing.

Using Idle Tesla Cars to Power AI at Scale

To expand Macrohard, xAI plans to use idle Tesla vehicles across North America as distributed computing nodes. Since cars remain connected, cooled, and powered while sitting idle 50–80% of the time, they could run AI human emulators at scale. This strategy could allow the company to grow from 1,000 to more than one million AI employees, as per the Coincodex report.

Macrohard’s Role in xAI’s New Four-Part Structure

Macrohard is now one of four core areas within xAI, alongside Grok’s chatbot and voice product, coding, and the Imagine video product. Toby Pohlen, a member of the founding team, leads the Macrohard division, as per a Bloomberg report.

Musk has described the project as potentially “profoundly influential on a massive scale,” as per the Coincodex report. He even painted the Macrohard name on the roof of the Colossus 2 data center in Memphis.

Meanwhile, some team members have departed, including engineer Sulaiman Ghori, who left after discussing the project publicly, he revealed xAI’s secret human emulation project on the Relentless podcast.
