The ministry's statement followed Reuters's report that Mininnguaq Kleist, the island's permanent secretary for foreign affairs, described the trip as a private visit. It cited a source who stated that the trip was a one-day excursion to record video for a podcast.

Last month, when he declared that acquiring the territory was absolutely necessary for purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the US president-elect made headlines.

In response to the US president-elect's remarks in December, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede reiterated on Facebook that the island was not for sale and will never be for sale. The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's office also echoed Egede, calling Trump's first-term suggestion that Greenland could be bought absurd.
