Colon cleansing is often referred to as a popular alternative remedy that, according to some people, removes waste and toxins from the colon. There is, however, little scientific evidence to back colon cleansing routines, except for those that doctors prescribe.
What is colon cleansing?
Colon cleansing involves flushing out the large intestine with liquid such as water. This process is often undertaken before some medical procedures. It allows healthcare professionals to see inside the intestine.
According to Mayo Clinic, some alternative medicine professionals believe that toxins from the digestive tract can result in headaches, arthritis, and other conditions. According to them, colon cleansing removes toxins and boosts energy or the immune system. It is pertinent to mention that there is no evidence that colon cleansing offers these helpful effects.
Types of colon cleanses
There are two main types of colon cleanses. Colonic irrigation, also known as a colonic, flushes out the colon with a large amount of liquid. It's done using a tube that's placed in the rectum, the last few inches of the large intestine. Second is an enema, which empties the colon using a small amount of liquid. The liquid is held in the large intestine for a short time before being removed.
Colon cleanses are done for medical reasons using water. According to Mayo Clinic, they are done for detoxing, and sometimes use herbal solutions, coffee, or coffee grounds instead of water.
Ways to clean the colon naturally
Besides options for medical and professional help, there are multiple ways to do natural colon cleanses that can be done cheaply, Healthline reported, citing multiple studies. Some of the ways include hydration, saltwater flush, taking a high-fiber diet, juices and smoothies, and adding probiotics to the diet, among others.
Probiotics introduce good bacteria to the gut with the help of fiber and resistant starches. These curb inflammation and promote regularity—two elements of digestive health related to the colon.
- Losing too much fluid, also called dehydration.
- A tear in the rectum, also called a perforation, is caused by placing a tube in the rectum.
- Infection.
- Change in the balance of important minerals in the body called electrolytes. This can be dangerous if you have kidney or heart disease or other health conditions.
