However, authorities have not confirmed whether Cole is the pipe bomber, and he has not yet been charged in connection with the case. Investigators are still determining a possible motive. But Cole’s political beliefs are under scrutiny, as very little is known about the suspected DC bomber.
According to MS NOW, who cited two people briefed on the arrest, the suspect has been linked to statements expressing support for “anarchist ideology.”
As questions about Cole’s alleged political ideology continue to circulate, here is what “anarchist ideology” means in political philosophy. And how far is anarchist ideology from MAGA and Antifa?

What is Anarchism?
Anarchist philosophy also emphasizes:
- Equality
- Community
- Non-coercive consensus building
Core ideas of anarchist political philosophy
The term "anarchism" comes from the Greek arché, meaning first principle or ruling power. Anarchy, therefore, means “non-rule” or absence of centralized authority.
Political anarchists generally argue that:
- State power is inherently coercive
- Centralized authority is illegitimate
- More decentralized, voluntary, or consensus-based forms of organization are preferable
- Mikhail Bakunin famously argued:
“If there is a State, there must be domination of one class by another… this is why we are the enemies of the State.” - Contemporary philosopher Gerard Casey wrote:
“States are criminal organizations. All states, not just the obviously totalitarian or repressive ones.”
Is Anarchism Linked to ANTIFA or MAGA?
Political scholars emphasize that anarchism is a broad philosophical tradition, whereas ANTIFA refers to loosely organized anti-fascist activist networks. While some activists within ANTIFA circles draw on anarchist thought, the two are not entirely synonymous.
On the other side is MAGA another populist ideology trending in the USA. And anarchism is not linked to MAGA, and the two ideologies stand in direct contrast. MAGA is a right-wing populist movement associated with President Donald Trump that supports strong state authority, strict law enforcement, and nationalist policies, positions fundamentally at odds with anarchist philosophy.
At this stage, neither investigators nor the FBI have publicly confirmed any ideological affiliation or whether Brian Cole's alleged views, if accurate, had any connection to the pipe bomb incident.
Who is Brian Cole?
Brian Cole Jr. is a 30-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, identified by multiple outlets as the man arrested in the Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation. According to CBS News, he graduated from a Prince William County school in 2013 and is expected to appear in federal court on December 4. NBC News reported that his step-grandfather, Earl Donnette, confirmed speaking with the FBI, while both he and Cole’s father declined further comment.
