What happens if Trump is impeached again - will he be removed from office? Here are the scenarios
Questions are being raised again about whether President Donald Trump could face impeachment during his second term after new corruption allegations from Democrats. The fresh impeachment talk started after Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut accused Trump of committing serious impeachable offenses.

Murphy said Trump has committed far more impeachable acts in his second term than he did during his first term as president. Murphy said impeachment can only happen if Democrats win back control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, according to Hindustan Times. He said this on Sunday in an interview with NBC, where he openly disagreed with senior Democrats who want to avoid talking about impeachment.

Trump corruption claims

Murphy claimed Trump has “stolen from the American people” through his actions while in office. Murphy accused Trump of mixing his presidency with his personal business interests. He pointed to Trump’s involvement in cryptocurrency projects that are linked to Trump’s family. Murphy also raised concerns about Trump accepting a luxury jet from Qatar to replace Air Force One. He alleged Trump shared national security information in exchange for foreign investment connected to a crypto venture linked to his family.

Murphy described Trump’s alleged actions as “wildly corrupt” and much more serious than anything during Trump’s first term. Murphy’s comments differ from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s view on impeachment. Pelosi said late last year that Trump’s conduct had not yet reached the level required for impeachment, as noted by Hindustan Times. Murphy said he respects Pelosi’s opinion but does not agree with her assessment.

How impeachment starts

Under the US Constitution, impeachment can only begin in the House of Representatives. Democrats are currently in the minority in the House, which makes any impeachment effort unlikely right now. In December, impeachment articles introduced by Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas were voted down, as stated by The Independent. The failed vote had support from both Republicans and Democrats.

Several Democratic lawmakers chose to vote “present” instead of supporting the impeachment effort. Even if Democrats win back the House after the 2026 elections, impeachment would still only be the first step. To remove a president, the US Senate must vote by a two-thirds majority, which is a very high bar, as mentioned by report by Hindustan Times. No US president has ever been removed from office after a Senate impeachment trial. Trump was impeached twice during his first term as president.

In both previous cases, the Senate acquitted Trump and he stayed in office. Murphy said that even if a new impeachment effort begins, it is unlikely to reach the Senate before 2027. Because of the current numbers in Congress and the tough Senate rules, Trump being removed from office remains very unlikely for now.
