Authorities in Arizona say they are treating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, as a suspected abduction following the alarming evidence found inside her Tucson-area residence.
Savannah Guthrie’s mother was likely snatched from her bed in her Tucson residence as she slept, Arizona officials disclosed Monday.
Sheriff Confirms Belief She Was Taken Against Her Will
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed investigators suspect Nancy Guthrie did not leave her residence voluntarily and was forcefully removed sometime during the night.“I believe she was abducted, yes,” Nanos told CBS of the 84-year-old woman.
The sheriff highlighted how rare and troubling the instances are.
“I can’t think of the last time where in the middle of the night in someone’s bed, an 84-year-old woman disappeared on us,” he stated to NBC.
“We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving.”
Timeline of Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
Nancy Guthrie was last found at almost 9:45 p.m. Saturday, after one of her children dropped her off at her home. Concern grew the following day when she failed to appear at church, initiating family to report her missing.Law enforcement immediately started searching the home and surrounding region as concern for her safety intensified.
“Very Concerning” Scene Found Inside the Home
During a press conference, Sheriff Nanos disclosed that investigators found troubling evidence inside the home, which led them to officially classify the situation as a crime.Authorities said several of Nancy’s key personal belongings were left behind, which includes medication she relies on everyday to survive. The property, explained as a rural, million-dollar residence, was equipped with security cameras that are currently part of the investigation.
Physical Limitations Rule Out Voluntary Departure
Sheriff Nanos explained that Nancy as mentally alert but physically constrained, making it unlikely she could have departed on her own.He cited that she is mentally “sharp as a tack” but physically restricted, unable to “walk 50 yards on her own” reinforcing investigators’ suspicion that she was forcibly taken.
“We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help,” the sheriff mentioned.
Race Against Time Due to Medical Needs
Officials highlighted the urgency of the situation, warning that Nancy’s health could quickly deteriorate without her medication.“She ‘is in need of medication, medication that if she doesn’t have it in 24 hours, it could be fatal,’” Nanos stated.
Despite Savannah Guthrie’s public profile, authorities stated there were no known threats connected to her status as a television figure.
