What happened after three black passengers were removed from a flight allegedly for their body odor? Several American Airlines employees have been sent on leave. In a terse note written to its employees, American CEO Robert Isom said that the incident was unacceptable. He said that he was incredibly disappointed by what happened on that flight and the breakdown of the set procedures. He added that the incident contradicted the values of the airlines fell short of commitments and failed customers.

What happened?
In a lawsuit filed in the court last month, three black passengers complained that they were removed from the January flight because of racial discrimination. They said in the complaint that they were told that a white male flight attendant had complained about an unidentified passenger's body odor. They also said that they did not know one another and they were sitting in the plane separately as they were waiting for the plane to take off for New York. There were eight black male passengers and all of them were told to leave the plane.


Black passengers were allowed back
According to their lawsuit, they confronted the airline personnel and demanded an explanation for their removal. One of them recorded the discussion and captured an airline employee agreeing that they were discriminated against. They were allowed back on the plane after an hour.

Earlier allegations
American Airlines has faced allegations of discrimination on earlier occasions too. The NAACP warned Black travelers about flying on the airline in 2017 and claimed that many African American passengers had experienced discrimination from airline employees.

American Airlines to form an advisory group
Isom said that American Airlines will constitute an advisory group to focus on the experience of Black customers and to promote the reporting of discrimination allegations. The group will also work to improve diversity training to "focus on real-world situations to help recognize and address bias and discrimination".
