Heidi Gardner is the latest cast member to exit "Saturday Night Live" ahead of its 51st season debut in early October 2025. Multiple news outlets like Vulture and Variety reported that Gardner, who joined the show in 2017 as a featured player and was promoted to repertory player in 2019, will be leaving after eight seasons. Her departure follows recent announcements that fellow cast members Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, and Michael Longfellow will also not be returning.

Gardner was the longest-serving current female cast member during the previous season and is known for her memorable characters and impressions on the show, as per NYP.

Why is Heidi Gardner leaving the show?

Heidi Gardner discussed her departure from "Saturday Night Live" during a podcast interview on "Joy" with Craig Ferguson, published on YouTube on February 18. Although she did not provide a reason for leaving, her comments sparked interest.

When asked about her tenure, she said, "Yeah, in my eighth season," confirming her eight years on the show. Gardner expressed that she still enjoys the work, saying, "I do," and highlighted her love for playing characters: "I love playing characters, so I can't really imagine a world where I'm going to get to do this to this degree again."

However, she also mentioned experiencing creative exhaustion, stating: "I will say the only thing that I've started to feel a little bit is just sketch fatigue or idea fatigue."

She explained this fatigue as a challenge that arises after long stints, saying, "At this point, after doing Groundlings and SNL for so long, I'm like, I've written a lot of sketches," and noted that sometimes she simply does not have an idea for "a sketch, a game, or a character," though the writers help her out with ideas.
