Rip currents are back in the news. Recently, six people drowned in Florida after getting caught by Rip currents. This geographical phenomenon results in the death of over 100 people every year in the US, according to the United States Lifestyle Association. Further, more than 80% of the beach rescues involve victims getting caught in the rip currents. In 2024, this has wreaked havoc in the coastal areas. The National Weather Service listed down that rip currents were responsible for 16 deaths this year. Including the fatalities recorded in Florida, there were eight other deaths recorded at Puerto Rico and two in Texas. This has yet again raised the importance of rip currents.

Rip current:

They are narrow columns of water which flow rapidly away from the beach. It is like a swift stream within the ocean. We know that water from deep inside the ocean enters the beach in the form of waves. The wind pushes the water from the ocean towards the beach. When this water recedes back into the ocean, rip currents can form. When this water flows rapidly back into the ocean, rip currents are said to be the reason. Sometimes, it flows as swiftly as eight feet per second and the best swimmers too find it difficult to overcome its effects.

Low spots near the beaches such as jetties or piers are often the spots where rip currents form.

Do they pull the swimmers into the ocean?

These currents do not pull swimmers under the water. They carry away the individual far away from the shore. They can be hard to detect as the surface water often appears calm. Further, while extreme weather conditions can cause rip currents, they do occur sometimes during sunny days too.

How to protect yourself from rip currents?

Experts and rescuers have pointed out that swimming straight can have detrimental effects and will only lead to exhaustion. It is advisable to swim parallel to the current and increase the chances of getting rescued. It is also advisable to avoid areas such as jetties which are prone to rip currents.
