Western New York hit with region’s strongest earthquake in 40 years of 3.8 magnitude

The earthquake occurred at approximately 6:15 am (EST) and reached a depth of 3 km, according to USGS. The earthquake occurred after two major earthquakes hit Turkey on the same day, one with a magnitude of 7.8 and the other with a magnitude of 7.6.

Region’s strongest in 40 years, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook Western New York on Monday. The earthquake was felt by people from Wilson to Hamburg, according to the reports. The USGS reported that the earthquake was of a magnitude of 3.8 and was centred 2 kilometres northeast of West Seneca.

A surveillance camera recorded the living room during the earthquake, it showed a loud bang, the sound of objects falling, and a dog barking. Mark Poloncarz, the County Executive of Erie County, has confirmed with the Department of Homeland Security and emergency services that the earthquake was felt from Niagara Falls in the north to Orchard Park in the south.



The 3.8 magnitude earthquake, as reported by the United States Geological Survey, struck Buffalo, New York at approximately 6:15 am (EST), according to US officials. USGS confirmed the earthquake and further reported that the epicentre was located in West Seneca and the tremors reached a depth of 3 km.

The United States Geological Survey notified about the earthquake via Twitter. It writes, “Good morning Buffalo! More on this morning's M3.8 earthquake.”


It is worth mentioning that these tremors occurred after two major earthquakes hit Turkey on Monday. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, resulting in the death of over 1,400 people and injuring thousands. Later in the day, another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck the Elbistan district in Turkey's Kahramanmaras province.
