Rockstar Games, the studio behind the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto series, has fired more than 30 employees across its UK and Canadian offices, saying the terminations were due to leaks of confidential company information. The move has sparked a major labor dispute, with union leaders claiming the dismissals were aimed at disrupting workers’ efforts to organize.

The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, which represents video game workers, accused the company of ‘one of the most blatant and ruthless acts of union busting’ in the industry’s history.’ The union said all the dismissed employees had participated in a private trade union Discord group, with labor organizers being the only outsiders involved in the conversation.

According to a Rockstar spokesperson, the employees in question had allegedly shared company information in a forum that included individuals outside the organization.

Union president Alex Marshall accused Rockstar of targeting employees for union activity, saying the company fears workers discussing their rights. He added that management ‘doesn’t care about delays to GTA VI and is prioritizing union-busting

Rockstar has maintained strict security measures, especially after a 2022 leak exposed dozens of videos of unfinished Grand Theft Auto VI footage. In early 2024, the studio required employees to return to the office full-time, citing security concerns, a move the union called ‘reckless.’

Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed for a second time and is now scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. Despite the delay, it is expected to be one of the best-selling video games of all time.
