The dam was constructed in 1936 and supports more than 20 million people and farmers today. Lake Mead, formed as a result of the construction of the dam, is also the largest freshwater reservoir in the US. Built on the Colorado River in the Black Canyon, it was dedicated to the nation by President Roosevelt. More than a hundred lives were lost in making the Hoover Dam, which has been named after President Herbert Hoover. More than 7 million tourists visit the area each year, and it is a very popular dam known worldwide.
The explosion had occured at transformer no. 5 at the dam. Doug Hendrix, the deputy public affairs specialist, suggested that the explosion may have been caused due to a fault in a specific transformer component. Tourists have been freely moving around despite the blast, and authorities did not provide any more information. They are relieved that nobody was harmed and that power production was unaffected.
