A new surveillance video released by the FBI shows the suspect in the Utah Valley University shooting that killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk fleeing across a rooftop shortly after the attack. Authorities said the suspect climbed onto the roof around 12 p.m. Mountain Time on September 10, 2025, fired the fatal shot (around 12:20 PM MDT) that struck Kirk in the neck, and then jumped off the building before escaping. A firearm and ammunition were later recovered in a wooded area near the university. Investigators also collected trace evidence from the rooftop, including shoe impressions, a forearm imprint, and a palm print.

According to a BBC report citing the FBI’s release, the suspect was wearing sunglasses, Converse shoes, and a distinctive black t-shirt featuring an American flag and eagle. Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason presented enhanced photos of the suspect and noted that incoming public tips “are giving us our next leads.”

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said law enforcement has received more than 7,000 tips so far the largest volume for the FBI since the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

Kirk was speaking on the campus of Utah Valley University on Wednesday when he was shot and killed. According to Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason, the shooter seemed to be a college student who blended in on the campus where Kirk was killed. Later, in a wooded area close to the university campus, police found a Mauser .30 caliber bolt-action rifle concealed in a towel.

Speaking engagements like the one at Utah Valley University, the scene of the shooting, were part of Kirk's long-term strategy to inspire young conservatives. In 2012, he established Turning Point USA, a group that focuses on youth and enters liberal college campuses.

The organization’s national headquarters is located in downtown Phoenix, and Kirk lived in the Valley.
