After Selena Gomez posted (and quickly removed) a heartfelt video in which she expressed regret for the deportation of undocumented immigrants in the US, the Trump Administration retaliated against the singer.
How did Donald Trump’s team respond?
"Their courageous mothers had something to say to @SelenaGomez and those who oppose securing our borders," the White House captioned a video that included comments from mothers of children killed by undocumented individuals, as quoted in a report by The Wrap.ALSO READ: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez aren't ready to leave each other's lives and this is the big reason for that
Besides casting doubt on Gomez's character, the video, which includes women whose children were tragically killed by undocumented individuals, falsely suggests that she lacks sympathy for the victims and was acting out her response to the mass deportations.
Gomez, a third-generation Mexican American, stated in her video earlier this month, "All my people are getting attacked … the children." I don't get it. I'm very sorry. I'd like to do something, but I'm unable to. I have no idea what to do. I swear, I'll try everything. In response to protests from Trump supporters, she quickly removed the video.
The mothers of Rachel Morin, Kayla Hamilton, and Jocelyn Nungaray were included in the White House's response, which was released on Friday. In June of last year, two undocumented men from Venezuela killed Nungaray.
In 2022, a teenage member of the MS-13 gang killed Hamilton, and Victor Martinez Hernandez, who came to the United States from El Salvador, raped and killed Morin.
Notably, Gomez discussed the deportation of children and other innocent people in her initial video, even though the Trump administration claimed that the actions were only directed at criminals.
