Doubts are growing around the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie. A former senior FBI official is now publicly questioning whether the case is actually a kidnapping at all. His comments come amid shifting ransom demands and unanswered questions about proof of life.

Is this really a kidnapping?

Chris Swecker, who previously served as an FBI Assistant Director, said he remains unconvinced that Nancy Guthrie is being held by kidnappers. Speaking on Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show,” Swecker said, “I’m very skeptical of this.”

He questioned the basic premise of the case, asking, “Is this really a kidnapping? Does somebody really have her, and is she really alive?” His comments focus on the lack of verifiable evidence from those claiming to be responsible, as per a report by The New York Post.

Where is the proof of life?

Swecker emphasized that legitimate kidnappings typically include clear confirmation that the victim is alive. “If this was a kidnapping, it would be a very simple matter to authenticate and provide proof of life,” he said, adding that no such evidence has been “credibly authenticated at this point.”

He also warned that investigators must remain open to other possibilities, stating, “You have to allow for the possibility that this was something more or something other than a kidnapping.”

Why did the ransom demand suddenly jump?

Another red flag, according to Swecker, is the sharp increase in ransom demands. Reports indicate the amount rose from $1 million to $6 million in just days. “Remember now, it was 1 million not too long ago. All of a sudden, it’s 6 million,” he said.

Swecker suggested the situation could involve outside actors, adding, “I really think there’s a third party here that’s just playing with them, opportunists who think they can exploit this situation.”

At least two alleged ransom messages have surfaced since Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home. One note, sent to multiple media outlets, included two deadlines, one that has already passed and another set for Monday, according to FBI officials, as per a report by The New York Post.
