A House hearing intended to address transgender athletes on Wednesday suddenly changed to another topic when Democrats grilled Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene with sharp accusations of insider trading, as per a report.

Hearing on Transgender Athletes Takes an Unexpected Turn

The conflict broke out during a hearing of the DOGE subcommittee, which was led by Greene herself, a session initially called to review matters on transgender engagement in sports such as fencing and other competitions, according to Business Insider. But what had started as a routine hearing was a political storm in no time when Democratic Reps. Jasmine Crockett and Greg Casar, both of Texas, brought the spotlight onto Greene's latest financial dealings.

Casar asserted that, "We're here because Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene thinks that if she picks on vulnerable people like trans folks, she can avoid having a discussion about the allegations of insider trading against her," as quoted in the report.

The Trades in Question

His remarks came after Greene bought tens of thousands of dollars in stock of various companies between April 2 and April 9, when US president Donald Trump's tariff announcement and subsequent pause led to huge shifts in the stock market, according to Business Insider.

However, the congresswoman has justified saying that, the trades were made by an independent financial advisor, as per the report. Last month, she explained, "That's something that my portfolio manager does for me, and he did a great job," emphasizing, "Guess what he did? He bought the dip," quoted Business Insider.

A Tense Standoff in the Room

While, Democrats have argued that Greene and other Republicans close to the US president may have known about his tariff moves before the official announcements, which let them profit from nonpublic information, as per the report.
