Billionaire Warren Buffett has deviated from his usual policy of non-involvement in local politics as he pushes his city of Omaha to scrap its proposed streetcar project. Buffet has said it would be excessively costly and inflexible compared to buses. This week, Buffett met with the mayor and sent a letter to the editor of the Omaha World-Herald to advocate against the $306 million project and encourage the city to allow citizens to vote on it.

However, city authorities are going forward with the streetcar project because they think it would encourage development, particularly the projected $600 million headquarters tower for Mutual of Omaha in the downtown area.
