Landing an internship at the White House remains one of the most sought-after opportunities for students and veterans interested in public service and government leadership. For the Fall 2026 White House Internship Program, applications are now open, but candidates must meet a strict set of non-negotiable requirements. For many aspiring young professionals, working at the White House is a dream opportunity.

The White House Internship Program is described as a public service leadership program designed to help future leaders build professional experience and leadership skills. Interns work directly across presidential and vice-presidential offices and take part in mentoring, research, event staffing, and public service initiatives.

The role offers hands-on experience inside the Presidential and Vice-Presidential offices, serving under President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, as per a report by The US Sun.

What are the four non-negotiable requirements?

The internship offers direct exposure to the workings of the Executive Office and leadership development.

But before applying, there are four key requirements every candidate must meet, as per a report by The US Sun. Here’s everything you need to know about eligibility and deadlines.

Every applicant must meet these four mandatory conditions:

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen
  2. Must be at least 18 years old
  3. Must pass drug testing and security screening
  4. Must agree to full-time in-person work

These are the core eligibility rules and cannot be waived. Applicants are also expected to work Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no work-from-home option available. Housing is not provided, so selected interns must arrange their own accommodation, as per The White House.

Who is eligible to apply?

In addition to the four basic requirements, applicants must fall into at least one approved category. This includes students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, recent graduates within two years of the internship start date, or veterans with a high school diploma who served on active duty in the previous two years.

Candidates must also submit two recommendation letters and answer application questions focused on leadership, public service, and alignment with the administration’s mission.

Examples include prompts such as describing how President Trump’s vision influenced the decision to apply and discussing leadership qualities in current Cabinet officials.

For example, “describe how President Trump’s vision for the country has influenced your decision to apply to the White House Internship Program."

“In your view, which current Cabinet Secretary do you most admire and believe best demonstrates effective leadership?” is another example, as per a report by The US Sun.

What is the application deadline?

For the Fall 2026 internship, the program runs from September 2 through December 18. The application deadline is Monday, April 6, 2026, so interested applicants need to move quickly. For students and veterans looking to build a career in public service, this remains one of the most prestigious internship opportunities available.
