Walton Goggins opens up about emotional exhaustion fueling his Fallout Season 2 performance

Actor Walton Goggins, popular for The White Lotus and The Righteous Gemstones, has captivated viewers with his recent performance in Prime Video's Fallout Season 2. Goggins features Cooper Howard/The Ghoul, a character experiencing emotional exhaustion, loss, and the battles of a chaotic world. Remarkably, the actor’s own fatigue and personal concerns are closely reflected in his character’s experiences, allowing him to channel genuine vulnerability into his character.

What Is Fallout Season 2 About?

Fallout Season 2 continues the narrative immediately following the events of Season 1, extending the post-apocalyptic world while intensifying its emotional stakes. The season follows the show’s three main characters as they are separated across the wasteland, each facing new dangers and challenges. Season 2 delves into how power, hope, and humanity collide in a fractured world battling to move forward.

A Scene Mirroring Real Life

Talking to Decider, Goggins stated that there is a situation in Episode 5, "The Wrangler," when his role, Cooper Howard, has "nothing left" and has "no control over his environment and doesn't understand what's happening in the world in real time." As it turned out, Goggins himself felt "the same way," he stated.

"We filmed that day the morning after the premiere of The White Lotus; I had about three hours of sleep. I just had nothing left in the tank; it was exactly where I needed to be for that day," he described.

Exhaustion as a Performance Tool

Goggins mentioned the fatigue he faced enhanced his on-screen performance throughout Season 2, not only for that scene. "I was depleted after White Lotus, as anyone on that journey was… And in some ways, I think it's the best thing that could happen to me, because then I was just splayed open emotionally. That's what was required of both Cooper Howard and The Ghoul this season."
