Wall Street 2026 outlook

US stock market outlook 2026: As 2026 approaches, Wall Street is preparing for a year shaped by competing forces, from questions about massive AI spending to concerns about pricing pressures and rising unemployment. Even after these potential headwinds, experts say falling interest rates could help keep corporate earnings steady, setting the tone for a cautious but hopeful year ahead, as per a report.

Investors are now looking closely at what analysts describe as the key signals for stocks and gold in 2026.

S&P 500 Forecast 2026: Will AI Spending Trigger Volatility for Stocks

After two strong years of double-digit growth, analysts expect the S&P 500 to continue rising as Ayako Yoshioka, portfolio consulting director at Wealth Enhancement, pointed to the index’s long-term average annual return of about 7% as a realistic target for 2026, as per a Yahoo Finance report. Yoshioka said, “Earnings growth is expected to be over 12%” next year, but said “elevated valuations remain a concern,” as quoted by Yahoo Finance. While the 7% target allows room for valuations to contract slightly.

Yoshioka also warned of possible volatility next year, saying, “as the AI theme continues to be hotly debated,” as quoted by Yahoo Finance.

Yoshioka said “earnings growth in 2025 for the S&P 600 index is expected to be 18% and valuation is more reasonable” vs. large caps, as quoted by Yahoo Finance. Yoshioka added that if interest rates stabilize in 2026, then mergers and acquisitions activity could increase, which would benefit smaller companies.

David Rosenstrock of Wharton Wealth Planning pointed out that small- and mid-cap technology and finance stocks could have a strong year due to earnings and financials may benefit from “innovation and a steeper yield curve, which should improve net interest margin,” and AI and digital innovation may also be key drivers, as quoted by Yahoo Finance.
