Two undersea cables in the Baltic Sea which linked Finland to Germany and Lithuania to Sweden's Gotland Island have been reportedly damaged while raising suspicions of possible sabotage amid heightened tensions with Russia, reported The U.S. Sun. The Finnish company Cinia reported that its 1,200 km cable connecting Helsinki to Rostock stopped functioning early morning while a 218 km cable between Lithuania and Gotland went out of service the previous day.

According to The U.S. Sun, both incidents have prompted investigations by Finnish and German authorities who have eventually expressed deep concern over the potential for intentional damage to critical infrastructure.

The timing of these disruptions coincides with increased Russian military activity in the region while it prompted warnings from US officials about the risk of sabotage targeting vital undersea communications, asserted The U.S. Sun.This follows a history of suspicious incidents in the Baltic Sea which includes damage to gas pipelines and previous cable disruptions linked to Russian operations.

Experts suggest that if these cable cuts are confirmed as intentional, it could sincerely represent a significant escalation in hybrid warfare tactics employed by Russia. The U.S. Sun noted that US intelligence has noted that Russia has been bolstering its capabilities for undersea sabotage through a specialized military unit known as GUGI.
